Umicore ranked ninth on the Global100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World index

Today Umicore achieved the top position in the Materials industry group of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World index. The index is published annually since 2005 by Corporate Knights, an independent media and investment research company based in Toronto, Canada.

It is the fifth year in a row that Umicore is taken up in the index and the fourth time the company is in the top 10. Umicore obtained an all-time high last year when it was ranked the most sustainable company in the world.

Marc Grynberg, CEO of Umicore stated: "Umicore started its journey to become a sustainable company more than 15 years ago and is seen today as one of the frontrunners in this domain. I’m happy about the recognition that our efforts have earned and that our approach is inspiring a growing number of companies around the world."

He added: "Not only were we one of the first companies to integrate environmental and social ambitions in our business strategy, our technologies help customers address significant environmental and societal challenges of the future. Our recycling services and materials for rechargeable batteries, for example offer unique solutions to address resource scarcity and reduce CO2 emissions. This is where we can make the biggest contribution."

Corporate Knights uses its flagship Global 100 ranking and the underlying research methodology to explore sustainable investment strategies with investors. They collect data for the project primarily from Bloomberg and through direct engagement with the 350 companies that made the project’s shortlist, selected from approximately 4,000 global mid and large cap stocks.

Note to editors

The Global 100 is an annual project initiated by Corporate Knights, the company for clean capitalism. Launched in 2005, the Global 100 is announced each year during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The Global 100 uses a two-step methodology. First, companies from the starting universe are screened according to their sustainability disclosure practices, financial health, product types and recent legal payouts. Those companies that remain are then scored, relative to their same-sector peers, on a set of key performance indicators (KPIs). A different suite of KPIs is used for companies in each industry, depending on recent reporting trends in each industry group.
