Umicore obtains third party validation for its sustainable procurement framework for cobalt
Umicore, the global materials technology and recycling group, today unveiled annual third-party verification for its Sustainable Procurement Framework for cobalt. Umicore was the first company in the world to have introduced such a framework for cobalt supply and the first to obtain external validation for its ethical procurement approach in this area.
Umicore is a world leader in cobalt-based chemicals and materials. These products are used in applications such as tooling, catalysis and lithium-ion rechargeable batteries for portable electronics and electric vehicles.
Umicore introduced a specific approach to sustainable and ethical cobalt sourcing in 2004. This has evolved over time to take into account the specific risks involved in the mining of cobalt in certain countries, such as child labour and poor health and safety practices.
Umicore’s framework, which has received third party validation from PwC, is inspired by the OECD’s Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas. It aims to minimize the risk of any connection between the cobalt in its supply chain – and subsequently that of its customers – and human rights abuses or unethical business practices.

Umicore’s Sustainable Procurement Charter provides the basis for the company’s sustainable sourcing of raw materials and other products. The Charter requests that suppliers adhere to specific standards in terms of environmental stewardship, labour practices and human rights, business integrity and supply chain engagement. Umicore a été la première entreprise au monde à introduire un tel cadre pour l'approvisionnement en cobalt et la première à obtenir une validation externe de son approche éthique des achats dans ce domaine.
Umicore est un leader mondial des produits chimiques et matériaux à base de cobalt. Ces produits sont utilisés dans des applications telles que l’outillage, la catalyse et les batteries lithium-ion pour l'électronique portable et les véhicules électriques.
En 2004, Umicore a instauré une approche spécifique de l’approvisionnement durable et éthique en cobalt. Au fil des ans, elle a évolué de manière à prendre en compte les risques spécifiques de l’extraction du cobalt dans certains pays, notamment le travail des enfants, les conditions sanitaires et les mesures de sécurité.
La charte d’Umicore, qui a été validée en externe par PwC, s’inspire du Guide OCDE sur le devoir de diligence pour des chaînes d’approvisionnement responsables en minerais provenant de zones de conflit ou à haut risque. Elle vise à réduire le risque de corrélation entre le cobalt dans sa chaîne d'approvisionnement (et par conséquent dans celle de ses clients) et une violation des droits de l’homme ou toute pratique commerciale non éthique.

La charte d'approvisionnement durable d’Umicore pour le cobalt a été spécifiquement énoncée et déployée en tenant compte des défis et de la nature de la chaîne d'approvisionnement en cobalt.
Umicore, de mondiale grondstoffentechnologie- en recyclinggroep, meldt vandaag de jaarlijkse ratificatie door derden voor zijn Sustainable Procurement Framework (programma voor duurzame aankopen) voor kobalt. Umicore was wereldwijd het eerste bedrijf dat een dergelijk programma introduceerde voor haar kobaltbevoorrading en ook het eerste bedrijf dat een externe ratificatie in de wacht sleepte voor haar ethische benadering van aankoop op dit domein.
Umicore is een wereldleider in chemicaliën en grondstoffen op basis van kobalt. Deze producten worden gebruikt in toepassingen als gereedschappen, katalyse en herlaadbare lithium-ionbatterijen voor draagbare elektronica en elektrische voertuigen.
In 2004 voerde Umicore een specifieke aanpak in voor duurzame en ethisch verantwoorde kobaltwinning. Dit programma is mettertijd geëvolueerd en omvat intussen ook specifieke risico's die in sommige landen kunnen opduiken bij de ontginning van kobalt, zoals kinderarbeid en ondermaatse gezondheids- en veiligheidspraktijken.
Het programma van Umicore kreeg zijn ratificatie door derden van PwC. Dit programma vond inspiratie in de "Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas" van de OESO, een pakket aanbevelingen voor de bevoorradingsketens van delfstoffen uit conflict- en risicogebieden. Umicore streeft ernaar om in haar bevoorradingsketen (en dus ook die van haar klanten) elk verband tussen kobalt en schending van mensenrechten of andere onethische bedrijfspraktijken te kortsluiten.

Het Sustainable Procurement Charter van Umicore vormt de basis voor de duurzame winning van ruwe grondstoffen en andere producten door het bedrijf. Het Charter eist dat leveranciers zich schikken naar specifieke standaarden inzake milieubeheer, arbeidsomstandigheden en mensenrechten, integriteit in zaakvoering en engagementen in de bevoorradingsketen.
