Umicore and Volkswagen Group-backed battery company PowerCo are proud to announce the name and branding of their first-of-its kind cooperation. Their Brussels-headquartered joint venture for large-scale industrial production of CAM and pCAM in Europe will bear the name IONWAY.
IONWAY is designed to supply PowerCo's European battery cell factories with key battery materials and cover a large part of PowerCo’s EU demand, while providing Umicore with secured access to an important part of the European demand for EV cathode materials. Both parents aim to grow IONWAY’s annual production capacity to 160 GWh by the end of the decade, corresponding to 2.2 million battery-electric vehicles.
IONWAY is the first-of-its-kind partnership between a car manufacturer based in Europe and a global leading producer of CAM, producing sustainable battery materials for the EV transition and a zero-emission future. Both parent companies are deeply committed to scaling up the EU footprint in the e-mobility business by establishing regional, sustainable and transparent battery supply chains.
Cathode active materials are the key technological lever for battery performance, they are the single biggest contributor to overall battery cost and define its carbon footprint. They are thus strategically important input materials central to battery value creation, and crucial for a successful powertrain transition towards sustainable e-mobility.
IONWAY will combine the resources and know-how that propel this transition and make sustainable progress accessible, banding together to build a new momentum with high-performance battery technology in a powerful partnership.

Thomas Jansseune has taken the helm as IONWAY’s first Chief Executive Officer on 1 July 2023, following 22 years at Umicore. In his last role, he led Umicore’s New Business Incubation with projects in venture capital, solid-state batteries, decarbonization, battery recycling, and hydrogen electrolysis. Prior to that, he was in charge of Corporate Development, held roles in marketing and sales, and served as managing director of a precious metals refining plant. Jansseune holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering.
CFO Achim Holzer joined IONWAY from Volkswagen Group Technology where he served as Head of Value Engineering & Central Purchasing Functions. Before he was Head of Value Engineering at AUDI. Holzer holds a doctoral degree in economics from University of Passau.

Umicore et PowerCo, société de batteries du groupe Volkswagen, sont fiers d'annoncer le nom et la marque de leur coopération, la première du genre. Basée à Bruxelles, leur coentreprise pour la production industrielle à grande échelle de matériaux cathodiques et leurs précurseurs en Europe, portera le nom de IONWAY.
IONWAY est conçue pour approvisionner les usines européennes de cellules de batteries de PowerCo en matériaux clés pour les batteries. Elle couvrira une grande partie de la demande de PowerCo dans l’UE, tout en offrant à Umicore un accès sécurisé à une part importante de la demande européenne de matériaux cathodiques pour véhicules électriques. Les deux sociétés mères ont pour objectif de porter la capacité de production annuelle de IONWAY à 160 GWh d’ici la fin de la décennie, ce qui correspond à 2,2 millions de véhicules électriques.
IONWAY est le premier partenariat du genre entre un constructeur automobile basé en Europe et un leader mondial de premier plan de matériaux cathodiques, produisant des matériaux de batterie durables pour la transition vers les véhicules électriques et un avenir sans émissions. Les deux sociétés mères sont fermement décidées à renforcer l'empreinte de l'UE dans le secteur de la mobilité électrique en établissant des chaînes d'approvisionnement régionales, durables et transparentes pour les batteries.
Les matériaux cathodiques sont le principal levier technologique de la performance des batteries, ils contribuent le plus au coût global de la batterie et définissent son empreinte carbone. Il s'agit donc de matériaux de base stratégiquement importants, essentiels à la création de valeur des batteries, et cruciaux pour une transition réussie du groupe motopropulseur vers la mobilité électrique durable.

Thomas Jansseune a pris la barre en tant que Chief Executive Officer de IONWAY le 1er juillet 2023, après 22 ans passés chez Umicore. Dans ses dernières fonctions, il a dirigé la New Business Incubation d'Umicore avec des projets dans le domaine du capital-risque, des batteries à l'état solide, de la décarbonation, du recyclage des batteries et de l'électrolyse de l'hydrogène. Avant cela, il a été responsable du développement de l'entreprise, a occupé des fonctions dans le domaine du marketing et des ventes et a été directeur général d'une usine de raffinage de métaux précieux. M. Jansseune est titulaire d'un doctorat en génie chimique.
Achim Holzer, Chief Financial Officer, a rejoint IONWAY après avoir occupé le poste de Head of Value Engineering & Central Purchasing Functionsau sein de Volkswagen Group Technology. Il était auparavant Head of Value Engineering chez AUDI. M. Holzer est titulaire d'un doctorat en économie de l'université de Passau.

Umicore en PowerCo, de batterijenproducent van Volkswagen Groep, kondigen met trots de naam en het logo van hun eerste samenwerking aan. Hun in Brussel gevestigde joint venture voor grootschalige industriële productie van CAM en pCAM in Europa heet IONWAY.
IONWAY zal de Europese batterijfabrieken van PowerCo bevoorraden met essentiële batterijmaterialen en zal een groot deel van de vraag van PowerCo in de EU dekken. Voor Umicore biedt de joint venture gewaarborgde toegang tot een belangrijk deel van de Europese vraag naar kathodematerialen voor elektrische voertuigen. Beide moedermaatschappijen willen tegen het eind van dit decennium de jaarlijkse productiecapaciteit van IONWAY laten groeien tot 160 GWh, wat goed is voor 2,2 miljoen batterij-elektrische voertuigen.
IONWAY is een uniek partnerschap tussen een autofabrikant in Europa en een wereldleider voor de productie van CAM. Het zal duurzame batterijmaterialen produceren in het kader van de transitie naar elektrische mobiliteit en een emissievrije toekomst. Beide moederbedrijven zijn vastberaden om de Europese voetafdruk op het gebied van elektrische mobiliteit te vergroten met regionale, duurzame en transparante toeleveringsketens voor batterijen.
Kathode-actieve materialen zijn de belangrijkste technologische hefboom voor batterijprestaties. Ze leveren de grootste bijdrage aan de totale batterijkosten en bepalen de koolstofvoetafdruk. Het zijn daarmee strategisch belangrijke inputmaterialen die centraal staan bij het creëren van waarde voor batterijen en cruciaal zijn voor een succesvolle overgang naar duurzame elektrische mobiliteit.
IONWAY zal de middelen en kennis combineren die deze transitie aandrijven en duurzame vooruitgang toegankelijk maken, door samen in een krachtig partnerschap te bouwen aan een nieuw momentum met geavanceerde batterijtechnologie.

In zijn laatste functie leidde hij de New Business Incubation van Umicore met projecten in risicokapitaal, solid-state batterijen, decarbonisatie, batterijrecyclage en waterstofelektrolyse. Daarvoor was hij verantwoordelijk voor Corporate Development, bekleedde hij functies in marketing en verkoop en was hij gedelegeerd bestuurder van een edelmetaalraffinaderij.
