The newly founded Brussels-based European EV battery materials producer IONWAY has chosen to build its first CAM production plant in Nysa, Poland, adjacent to Umicore’s existing CAM plant. The JV, backed by Umicore and Volkswagen Group-owned PowerCo, is scaling up the EU footprint in the e-mobility business with the ambition to grow its annual production capacity to 160 GWh by the end of the decade, corresponding to 2.2 million battery-electric vehicles, based on market developments. IONWAY will thus help the European Union achieve its Green Deal ambitions by accelerating the establishment of regional, sustainable, and transparent battery value chains.

The Polish government strongly supports the investment in Nysa - which is expected to create about 900 future-proof industry jobs in Nysa towards the end of the decade - and is offering IONWAY € 350 million in cash grants under the Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework[1] for a total investment of up to € 1.7 billion (€ 1.35 billion after grants) by the end of the decade.

Preparation of the site, engineering and permitting are ongoing and construction will start soonest once the permitting process is completed. Production of the plant is expected to begin as soon as construction is completed, while PowerCo´s CAM demand for the Salzgitter cell gigafactory is secured from the existing production capacity of Umicore in Nysa in time for its start of production in 2025.
IONWAY’s choice for Nysa and Poland is based on their strategic location with access to renewable energy sources to power the plant’s production as well as a skilled workforce, and follows the support from the Polish government. Moreover, the production facility will benefit from Umicore’s nearby CAM knowhow in Nysa and easy access to raw materials from Umicore’s refining operations in Finland.

IONWAY will produce tailored high-performance CAM as well as the related precursor materials (pCAM), and supply it to PowerCo’s European battery cell gigafactories. The site selection for IONWAY’s pCAM plant is ongoing and will be announced at a later date. As the key technological levers for the performance of rechargeable batteries, pCAM and CAM are essential to a successful powertrain transition towards e-mobility, with ultra-pure CAM being the battery’s most critical and therefore valuable component.

Le nouveau producteur européen de matériaux pour batteries de véhicules électriques IONWAY, basé à Bruxelles, a choisi de construire sa première usine de production de matériaux cathodiques à Nysa, en Pologne, à côté de l'usine de matériaux cathodiques existante d'Umicore. La coentreprise, soutenue par Umicore et PowerCo, propriété du groupe Volkswagen, renforce la présence de l'UE dans le secteur de la mobilité électrique avec l'ambition de porter sa capacité de production annuelle à 160 GWh d'ici la fin de la décennie, ce qui correspond à 2,2 millions de véhicules électriques, en fonction de l'évolution du marché. Le gouvernement polonais soutient fermement l'investissement à Nysa - qui devrait créer environ 900 emplois industriels pérennes à Nysa d’ici à la fin de la décennie - et offre à IONWAY 350 millions d'euros de subventions en espèces au titre de l’encadrement temporaire de crise et de transition[1], pour un investissement total pouvant atteindre 1,7 milliard d'euros (1,35 milliard d'euros après subventions) d'ici à la fin de la décennie.

La préparation du site, l'ingénierie et l'obtention des permis sont en cours et la construction commencera dès que le processus d'obtention des permis sera achevé. La production de l'usine devrait commencer dès que la construction sera achevée, tandis que la demande de matériaux cathodiques de PowerCo pour la gigafactory de Salzgitter est assurée par la capacité de production existante d'Umicore à Nysa, à temps pour son entrée en production en 2025.
Le choix d'IONWAY pour Nysa et la Pologne est basé sur leur emplacement stratégique avec un accès à des sources d'énergie renouvelable pour alimenter la production de l'usine ainsi qu'une main-d'œuvre qualifiée, et fait suite au soutien du gouvernement polonais. En outre, l'usine bénéficiera du savoir-faire d'Umicore en matière de matériaux actifs cathodiques à Nysa et d'un accès aisé aux matières premières provenant des activités de raffinage d'Umicore en Finlande.

IONWAY produira des matériaux actifs cathodiques haute performance sur mesure ainsi que les matériaux précurseurs correspondants et les fournira aux gigafactory européennes de cellules de batteries de PowerCo. Le choix du site de l'usine de matériaux précurseurs de IONWAY est en cours et sera annoncé ultérieurement. En tant que leviers technologiques clés pour la performance des batteries rechargeables, les matériaux précurseurs et matériaux actifs cathodiques sont essentiels pour une transition réussie du groupe motopropulseur vers la mobilité électrique, le matériau actif cathodique ultra-pur étant le composant le plus critique et donc le plus précieux de la batterie.

De recent opgerichte Europese producent van batterijmaterialen voor EV's IONWAY, gevestigd in Brussel, heeft besloten haar eerste fabriek voor de productie van CAM te bouwen in Nysa, Polen, naast de huidige CAM-fabriek van Umicore. De joint venture, gesteund door Umicore en PowerCo, dat toebehoort aan de Volkswagen Groep, is haar voetafdruk in de e-mobiliteitssector aan het vergroten. Tegen het einde van het decennium wil IONWAY een jaarlijkse productiecapaciteit bereiken van 160 GWh, goed voor 2,2 miljoen batterij-elektrische voertuigen, op basis van de marktontwikkelingen. IONWAY draagt bij aan het realiseren van Green Deal van de EU met het versneld oprichten van regionale, duurzame en transparante waardeketens voor batterijen..

De Poolse regering steunt de investering in Nysa nadrukkelijk -- naar verwachting zullen tegen het einde van het decennium ongeveer 900 toekomstbestendige banen in de industrie worden gecreëerd – en biedt IONWAY € 350 miljoen aan subsidies in contanten onder het tijdelijke crisis- en transitiekader[1] voor een totale investering tot € 1,7 miljard (€ 1,35 miljard na subsidies) tegen het einde van het decennium.

De voorbereiding van de site, de technische werken en vergunningen zijn aan de gang en de bouw zal starten zodra het vergunningsproces is afgerond. De productie in de fabriek zal naar verwachting opstarten wanneer de bouw is voltooid. De CAM bestemd voor de gigafabriek van PowerCo in Salzgitter wordt, tijdig voor de start van de productie in 2025, verzekerd vanuit de bestaande productiecapaciteit van Umicore in Nysa.
IONWAY's keuze voor Nysa en Polen is gebaseerd op hun strategische locatie met toegang tot hernieuwbare energiebronnen die de energie zullen voorzien van de productie van de fabriek, evenals bekwame werknemers arbeidskrachten, en volgt op de steun van de Poolse regering. Bovendien zal de productiefaciliteit genieten van de nabije kennis van Umicore in CAM en de gemakkelijke toegang tot grondstoffen van de raffinageactiviteiten van Umicore in Finland.

IONWAY zal op maat gemaakte hoogwaardige CAM en de bijbehorende precursormaterialen (pCAM) produceren en leveren aan de Europese gigafabrieken voor batterijcellen van PowerCo. De keuze van de locatie voor IONWAY's pCAM-fabriek is nog gaande en zal op een later tijdstip worden aangekondigd. Als belangrijkste technologische hefbomen voor de prestaties van herlaadbare batterijen zijn pCAM en CAM essentieel voor een succesvolle overgang naar e-mobiliteit, waarbij ultra-zuiver CAM de belangrijkste en dus kostbaarste component van de batterij is.
