Can you describe your role at Umicore?
I take on a Project Manager role within Umicore’s Purchasing & Transportation (P&T) corporate service. We aim at providing an excellent service for storage and delivery of spare parts and consumables at the warehouses in Hoboken and Olen. My current focus is on streamlining and implementing warehouse improvements, as well as exploring new opportunities.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I really enjoy that I can take full ownership of several projects simultaneously. It allows me to further develop skills such as project management, time management, leadership skills, people management, planning, etc.
What do you enjoy about working for Umicore?
As a global leader in materials, recycling, clean technologies and sustainable development, Umicore’s activities are perfectly in line with my interests as an engineer and as a person. In a way we are shaping the future, and that’s very exciting. It is also a dynamic organization and as a young graduate you get plenty of opportunities to grow and learn in an international setting.
Why did you want to join Umicore?
As a student, I learnt that Umicore actively supported engineering student teams that were building electric vehicles, and solar powered boats. I kept following the company and I was fortunate to get an internship position within the Rechargeable Battery Materials business unit. This internship further stoked my interest in the company and convinced me even more that Umicore was the best place for me to grow as an engineer and a place where I could add value.
What are you looking forward to when you leave for work in the morning?
Every day I am confronted with new challenges, which makes it unique. It motivates me to get up and start my day, especially knowing that I can actively solve problems and provide solutions for our customers. I also enjoy the diverse nature of the projects, that are combined with several operational responsibilities. This kind of variety and flexibility gives me energy on a daily basis.
What has been your highlight so far in your role at Umicore?
During my internship, I got the opportunity to make a 10-day trip to Hong Kong, China and South Korea to meet with members of the Umicore Asia team and learn about their operations. I thought this would be a once in a lifetime experience, but it turned out to be the first of several other trips. Building international relations between countries and cultures is truly fantastic!
Advice for new joiners?
At Umicore, it is key to have an open, international and entrepreneurial mindset.
